What are Mortgage-Backed Securities?

A quasi-mutual fund trust (MBS; mortgage-backed security) provides an opportunity to invest in a diversified portfolio of residential and commercial mortgages. By pooling funds, investors gain access to secured investments backed by real estate.

A quasi-mutual fund trust operates under Section 130.1 of the Canadian Income Tax Act, making it eligible for inclusion in registered plans such as RRSPs, TFSAs, RESPs, and RRIFs. These trusts are also required to distribute 100% of their annual net earnings to unitholders, ensuring consistent returns.
